The thermal mineral resources of the Viterbo
area are some of the best and most numerous
Italy has to offer. Rediscover the power
of your senses through contact with the
water, the hot mud, massage and aroma of
essential oils. Some of the best known spas
are the Terme del Bulicame, just outside
Viterbo, dominated by the ruins of an old
aqueduct. The temperature of spring is 58°C.
These waters are highly therapeutic: Dante
quoted them in his Inferno and Michelangelo
featured the spa in several paintings.
Then there are the highly popular and spectacular hot sulphuric falls and springs of SATURNIA and the ancient Roman baths called LA FICONCELLA near Civitavecchia.
There's also an excellent hot spring centre (hot and cold, next to an olive grove) just outside Vetralla (at the Vetralla/Rome/Cassia exit of the Orte-Civitavecchia highway) called "Le Masse di San Sisto". You just need to join the association (25.00 Euro annual fee): open 24 h 7/7, 365 days a year!

There are two major private
bath complexes: "Le Terme dei Papi"
and the "Pianeta Benessere", as
well as a few natural pools with free access
night and day, the best known being Paliano,
Bulicame and Bagnaccio. The baths:
Le Terme dei Papi get their name
from the fact that the spas was a favourite
with many a Pope, being just outside Viterbo
(a city with a long history of connections
with the Roman See). The hot springs (40-58°
C) contain sulphur, sulphates, bicarbonates,
alkali and mud. Watch out for that typical
"bad-egg" smell!
Today the complex offers a swimming-pool
(2,000 m2) fed by the Bulicame spring, a
grotto for inhalations and a whole range
of beauty and medical treatments and therapies.
Pianeta Benessere is one of the best
equipped spas in Europe. The spa waters
and mud are combined with a vast assortment
of beauty treatments and hydro-massage using
modern techniques. The water and mud come
from the Bagnaccio area.
The springs:
Paliano Here you'll find a pool filled
with extremely hot water and the ruins of
an aqueduct.
Bulicame Famous for the therapeutic
properties of its waters. A source of inspiration
for both Michelangelo and Dante.
Bagnaccio A wide sulphurous area
with several natural pools that you can
enjoy all year round thanks to the warm
water.
Just outside Civitavecchia,
by the Terme di Traiano archaeological site are the hot springs known as La Ficoncella:
a popular bathing place with noble ancient
Romans. The water springs from limestone
at a temperature of 56 °C, close to
a large, ancient pool. Clear and sweet (no
sulphur), but slightly radioactive, the water is collected in five
different pools. Ideal for anyone suffering
from sore joints, skin problems and allergies.
The charm of the location (surrounded by
hills) makes this a particularly relaxing
experience. Just 0.52 Euro per person and per car to enter!!!
