Autumn's officially
here at the end of the month, but
the Italian summer continues, even
though the days are getting shorter.
Not to be missed: the Procession of
Santa Rosa and the Macchina di Santa
Rosa in Viterbo.
For a real taste of the country: Cellere
Fra Natura e Tradizione.
Procession of Santa
Rosa Viterbo
September 2nd. A historical procession,
when the city authorities and the
clergy made their way together to
pay homage to the patron saint of
this city.
La Macchina Di Santa Rosa Viterbo
September 3rd. A tower some 30 metres
high and lit by a thousand flames
is carried on the shoulders of 100
"facchini" (porters) through
the narrow streets of this Mediaeval
city. A unique sight repeated every
year over the centuries (records go
back to 1654). The meaning of the
tower is the translation of the saint's
body from the church of Santa Maria
del Poggio to its present resting
place, the church of San Damiano.
