A typical Italian hill-top
town sitting atop a large block of Travertina
stone, with remains of ancient Etruscan
and Roman settlements, such as the Porta
Romana an ancient Roman road, the city walls,
the "Puntone" Etruscan necropolis
and the ruins of the ancient baths.
There's even a legend concerning the baths
of Saturnia: it's claimed that the god Saturn
threw a thunderbolt at the earth in a fit
of rage caused by the eternal fighting among
humans, thus forming a crater that quickly
filled with hot water, while steam filled
the air. A new, wiser and more aware humanity
was born of this sulphurous mist.
On a more prosaic note, the hills and mountains,
lakes and sea of Tuscany and Lazio attract
an enormous quantity lightening, thus explaining
the ancient civilisations' fixation with
thunderbolts!
These baths are famous the world over
for their cosmetic and therapeutic properties.
The sulphurous water (smelling like bad-eggs!)
springs from the depths of the earth at a
rate of 800 litres a second and at a constant
temperature of 37°C.
The complex includes a restaurant, hotel,
bar and a wide range of beauty treatments
and therapies, plus a series of swimming-pools,
underwater jets and waterfalls for the perfect
massage!

"Cascate del Mulino", a magical
place where the Gorello River and the spring
water have created a series of waterfalls
and pools. Great all year round; truly romantic
under a full moon.
