Lake Bolsena
Lake Mezzano
Hot springs and spas
This river springs in Tuscany, on the slopes
of Monte Amiata, and runs down to the sea
cutting through the limestone and tuff rock
formed when the local volcanoes exploded
(about five hundred thousand years ago).
The Fiora Valley is a site of European Community
Interest thanks to its relatively uncontaminated
nature and landscape; one stretch of this
river forms the Vulci WWF Nature Reserve
and then continues on through the Vulci
Archaeology and Nature Park (including Lake
Pellicone with its spectacular waterfall
created by the river).
Flora: Turkey Oak, Holm Oak, Cork tree,
Terebinth, Heather, Strawberry tree and
Myrtle bush. The water's so pure that in
certain points you can still find watercress
growing in the shallows (Eremo di Poggio
Conte).
Fauna: the nowadays rare otter (the symbol
of the Vulci WWF Nature Reserve), the equally
rare nutria, plus porcupines, hedgehogs,
weasels, badgers, foxes, wild boar,... The
lakes and shallows along its course also
attract many birds (including storks and
herons), while dazzling blue dragon flies
can be seen throughout the summer. If you're
very luckily, in May you can even enjoy
the night-time spectacle of mating glow-worms.
Fishers beware: you need a permit!
There are two picnic areas on the banks of the
river, below the town of Caninp. Near the first is the Pellico
waterfall and then, further along the signposted
track, is the Musignano reservoir and walks to
Mount Canino and around the local area.
There's also a good picnic site just outside Cellere in the area known as the "Parco del Timone"
