The "Borgo Nuovo"
(Monte Romano) was built as a model
farming town at the beginning of the
1600s and is the result of a compromise
between baroque architecture and a
farming community's practical needs.
Coming from the South-West (Tarquinia),
just after the town gate on the left
is the Granaio Agucchi (grain store).
On the other side of the road is the
elegant town centre with the Rocca
Nuova, the Chiesa Vecchia, the Fontana
del Mascherone, the Torre dell'Orologio
(clock tower, with prison cells below)
and the "Case in linea"
nearby (built using an innovative
mass housing construction technique
for those times).
The centre of town has no fewer than
four interconnected squares, on several
levels, creating a wide open space
with a very Italian feel to it: Piazza
Dante, Piazza dello Statuto, Piazza
Plebiscito and Piazza XXIV.
