USEFUL INFO FOR FOREIGNERS TRAVELLING TO ITALY

Non-EC: valid passport plus visa

  • Ciampino (no-frills + charter)

  • Civitavecchia (ships + train)
  • Orte (train)

Driving & Car hire:
GB tourists: please remember to drive on the right! Fix an image in your mind to refer to when in doubt (at roundabouts, junctions, bends in country lanes etc.) as Italian lane discipline and road-markings aren't that good!
Dipped headlights are required, even during the day, while travelling on motorways and major roads outside cities.

Alcohol in the bloodstream; 0.5 grams per litre.
Mobile telephones when driving: prohibited, unless you use hands-free devices.

Green card obligatory.
Tolls are charged on the majority of motorways in Italy: you can avoid the queues by using you credit cards in the "Fastpay" exit.

Breakdowns: you must have at least one reflective safety jacket to wear it when standing with, inspecting or repairing a stationary vehicle on a public highway. Red triangle also obligatory and hazard warning lights on.

Italian Police may stop cars "at will" (especially if it's a beautiful sunny day!). On-the-spot fines. They can also stop you from driving in mountain areas in winter if your car does not have snow chains (mountain areas).
If renting, check the rental insurance terms carefully: you may not have comprehensive cover.

Public transport:
Bus and train tickets must be endorsed in a ticket machine before commencing your journey (machine found at the entrance to platforms, in the entrance hall to metro stations and on board buses and trams).

Use officially licensed taxis only. Make sure that the meter in the taxi has been restarted! If your trip takes you outside the city, you may be requested to pay the return trip (taxi empty): check first!

Health:
Always carry a completed E111 for free emergency medical treatment in Italian state hospitals and the night-time emergency centres ("guardia medica") in most towns. Medical and travel insurance recommended.
NB: you won't find over-the-counter drugs in supermarkets: you must go to a proper chemist's.

Bank/Shop/Museum opening hours:
Italy does not have continuous opening hours (apart from major shopping centres). Shops generally close from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (or even 5 p.m. in the Summer!), but stay open later (7.30 p.m. or so). Bank hours are Mon-Fri, 8.30 - 1 p.m. and an hour in the afternoon (roughly 3-4 p.m.). Virtually no Saturday banking. Cash points available in most towns. NB: smaller commercial concerns may not accept credit cards!

Animals:
Ants, lizards, field mouse, mosquitoes, wasps: far more here than in Northern Europe. Make sure you pack some insect repellent and avoid leaving food unprotected.

Utilities:
Water, gas and electricity should all be included in the cost of your accommodation. Bring an electricity adaptor with you: Italy uses 22V. At the height of Summer there may be water shortages. Tap water is safe to drink. If renting, make sure you get meter readings at the start and end your stay. Italy has virtually no natural energy sources (apart from the sun), so power is expensive.
Rubbish collection: those ugly bins on the side of the road (in Summer there may be restrictions as to when you can chuck your rubbish due to the heat and resulting stink). Door-to-door collection a rarity. Most councils provide recycling bins.

Emergency numbers:

  112 Carabinieri
  113 Police
  115 Fire Brigade
  118 Ambulance
  1515 Forestry
  1530 Coastguard
