The English archaeologist
and academic, George Dennis, visited Etruria
in the middle of the 1800s and was enchanted
by the Maremma, truly appreciating its great
natural beauty and the many archaeological
finds and sites, especially in Tarquinia
and Vulci. He wrote about these in his many
letters and his major work, "Cities
and Cemeteries of Etruria".
Gorge Dennis was born in London in
1814. A British diplomat and archaeologist,
he took part in excavations in the Pyrenees
and Asia Minor and visited Etruria in the
years 1842 - 1847. The Maremma was to prove
his great passion. His major work, "Cities
and Cemeteries of Etruria" (1848),
is based on his observations during this
period.
The book covers the various stages of his
personal Gran Tour, including chapters on
Tarquinia, Vulci, Canino, Ischia and Farnese,
and provides many an interesting description
of how the archaeological sites and tombs
appeared to travellers of that time.
