Thirst-quenching watermelon
The area's full of watermelons in July
and August. So many, in fact, that the farmers
often leave them to rot in the fields...
Eaten sliced or in fruit salad. Best not to
eat those seeds!
Perfect for a picnic or on the beach. |
Citrullus vulgaris, belonging to the Cucurbitaceae
family, Several varieties are grown in the area,
especially FARAO.
Nutritional benefits:
Watermelon is an excellent source of... water!
Its water content can be anything up to 95%.
Vitamins A, B and C. A good source
of Potassium and Magnesium.
It also contains a carotenoid: lycopene, having
antioxidant and cancer-preventing properties.
How to choose them?
Seeds should be dark. Look for one that's heavy
for its size, with a smooth rind that's not too
shiny or too dull. One side of the melon should
obviously be the underbelly (lighter in colour)
that was resting on the ground during ripening.
If the colour's even all over, it's a sign that
the watermelon was harvested prematurely (affecting
its taste, texture and juiciness).
