Refreshing sweet cantaloupe melon
Half of the typical Italian antipasto
- prosciutto e melone - cantaloupe melon is
a welcome, versatile sweet Summer fruit. Ever
tried adding it to white wine...?
There's usually a glut towards the end of
June, meaning roadside stalls selling melons
at rock-bottom prices.
|
Cucumis melo belonging to the Cucurbitaceae family,
four varieties are grown in the area: PERSEO, CENTRO,
NEGHEV and PROTEO. Of these only the last is grown
in open fields, the rest being greenhouse crops.
Nutritional benefits:
Cantaloupe melon is an excellent source of
Vitamin A and Vitamin C, as well as being
a good source of Potassium.
How to choose them?
Check the point where the stem's attached: there
should no signs of mould or excessive softness.
You'll often find Italians sniffing the melons checking
for their delicate aroma, or tapping them to check
for that hollow sound. Shrivelled stems mean the
melons were picked too soon. Melons do not ripen
after picking and only keep for about two weeks
after that.
