Freshwater or saltwater fish... the choice
is yours.
What with the lake (Lake Bolsena)
and the sea, plus the three main rivers
(Fiora, Marta and Mignone), there's no shortage
of fish.
The old port down in Civitavecchia
is a favourite place to watch the fishing
boats come in. Very popular at Christmas
time, as Italians simply must eat fish (no
turkey for them). Friday is also the traditional
day for fish (religious reasons).
The Italians have a special style of rowing:
standing up! Watch out for them, especially
on the lake.
There are also some "bilancioni"
(fishing nets that are lowered from strange
wooden scaffolding on the river banks) to
be seen, especially near the River Marta
estuary.
You'll find anglers all along the coast.
N.B. There's a particularly vicious little
fish that occasionally rears its ugly head
(quite literally): the "traccina".
More often found on the Adriatic coast,
it lurks under the sand and shoots poison
into your feet from a spine on its head
if you're unlucky enough to tread on it.
The excruciating pain disappears if you
put your foot in a bowl of HOT water.
