| Canino has several interesting buildings along
its old main street, such as the 6th century Chiesa
di Santa Croce with its Romanic portal, the 15th
century Palazzo Miccinelli, the Palazzi dei Falsacappa
with their interesting portals bearing coat of arms.
At the bottom of town is the Palazzo del Comune
(Tourist Office inside: Tel.+39.0761/438080).
Close to Palazzo Comunale is the Castello Farnese
with a tower and statue dedicated to Pope Paolo
III (born in Canino). Nearby is the Castello Bonaparte,
the residence of the important Farnese family.
Round the corner in Piazza Mazzini a few years
ago, when the council started to excavate the
square for an underground parking lot, the remains
of a Mediaeval settlement was discovered. Left
open to visitors for a few months, the excavations
were fully documented by the local archaeological
group and then filled in again and covered with
lawns.
To the left of the old main street, just off
Piazza De Andreis with its fountain, is the area
known as "Le Buche": a network of narrow
streets and alley-ways containing a public wash-house
built by the Farnese family, now used as a community
centre.
Further up in the main square, Piazza De Andreis,
is the Church of Saint Andrew and John and a twelve-faceted
fountain by Vignola. Almost opposite, in Piazza
Valentini is the Theatre and some superb Cedar
trees. This is where the locals hang out, come
rain or shine.
