Legend has it that the city was founded by Ascanius,
son of Aeneas of Troy (or Tuscus, son of Hercules
and Araxe). To distinguish this settlement from
the nearby, more prosperous centre of Tuscania,
also founded by Ascanius, they decided to call
it "Little Tuscania", i.e. Tessennano
(nano means dwarf in modern Italian).
